There are two main components to the test. First they cool the oil, then they freeze it to make sure it�s durable under the most extreme conditions.
First the oil is subjected to the oil industry�s Sequence IIIG test, which involves running oil at over 300 degrees Fahrenheit in a standard test engine for more than 600 hours to simulate relentless high-speed highway travel in extreme heat. After which the engine is inspected for sludge, cam lobe and lifter wear and piston deposits, and the oil is evaluated for viscosity retention and resistance to oxidation.
Only if the oil passes the Sequence IIIG test does it go on to the second stage of the test. The Same oil gets chilled to temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit and tested for flow and pumpability. If it doesn�t flow as freely as it should, it�s done. No second chances. Only after it�s successfully weathered both extremes and proven itself to be outstandingly durable, is an oil GM 4718 certified.
